Mentoring youth in ventura county
We are committed to making our community a better place by building leaders of the future.
ELIJAH R. – Kindergarten – Juan Soria Elementary School
Elijah’s mom was first introduced to our Summer Reading Challenge through a flyer at his school. After registering, Elijah’s mom would take him to the local library to select different books to read. He ended up reading 18 books this summer, but his favorite book was “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” by Ryan T. Higgins, which he actually received as a prize from VISION. Elijah enjoys playing soccer and is interested in Anime. His favorite subject in school is Math and whenever Elijah struggles or gets stuck, he always remembers his magic words, “Never give up.” Congratulations, Elijah! Keep up the great reading!
On March 5th, Erica Alfaro visited Oxnard! She hand delivered a copy of her newest book, Harvesting Dreams, to each of our members in attendance. We enjoyed an afternoon hearing from her, receiving signed copies of her book and having a lunch together.
If you are interested in purchasing a copy of her book, click on the link below. You do not want to miss out on reading this incredibly inspirational book!
At Vision Young Leaders' Academy we host a group hangout on the 2nd Friday of every month in order to build a supportive community filled with a variety of fun filled activities. One recent group hangout was at Skating Plus in Ventura. Even though falling seemed to be the theme of the evening for some of us, we had such a fun time roller skating and hanging out together.
Each quarter we hold a Vision Book Club. We select a current Young Adult Book and meet biweekly to discuss. We are currently reading Harvesting Dreams by Erica Alfaro. Grab a copy of her book and join us!
We are committed to making our community a better place and have community service events throughout the year. This year our young members collected personal items for 100 hygiene bags to be distributed to displaced community members in Oxnard.
Professional soccer player, Yadira Toraya, joined our meetup to share her story from childhood to becoming a professional soccer player. She explained the many struggles she encountered along the way and how her desire to succeed was greater than any hurdle she met. Yadira challenged our members to set goals and never give up on them. She instilled in them that it doesn't matter who you are or where you are from, anything is possible.
We are dedicated to improving the lives of those in our community. Your contribution today helps us make a difference. Please donate below. Your donation is tax deductible and greatly appreciated.
